Williams helps Dream outlast Lynx

Elizabeth Williams had 17 points and eight rebounds, and the host Atlanta Dream downed the Minnesota Lynx 60-53 in a defensive battle on Friday.

Alex Bentley was the only other Dream player in double figures with 10 points. Monique Billings supplied eight points and eight rebounds off the bench, and Tiffany Hayes added seven points on 3-for-14 shooting.

Atlanta (5-10) captured the win despite shooting 33.8 percent overall and 16.0 percent on 3-point attempts. The Lynx (9-7) were limited to 35.4 percent shooting and 25.0 percent on 3-point tries.

Danielle Robinson led the Lynx, who had a three-game winning streak snapped, with 14 points. Sylvia Fowles had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Dream avenged an 85-68 loss to the Lynx on July 2 in Minneapolis. Stephanie Talbot, who led Minnesota in the earlier matchup with 24 points, was held to three points on Friday.

Williams scored nine points as the Dream jumped to a 22-13 lead through one quarter. They were up 37-32 at the break.

Williams, with 13 points, was the only player in double figures at halftime. Atlanta relied on its defense, as it shot just 1-for-14 from deep in the opening half. The Lynx shot 41.2 percent from the field and made six turnovers.

The Dream grabbed a 47-44 late in the third quarter on a Brittney Sykes layup.

Atlanta also scored the first four points of the fourth, including a Billings basket with 7:13 remaining to lead 51-44. Talbot answered with a three, but the Dream scored the next four points, including a pullup jumper by Bentley to make it 55-47 with 3:38 to play.

A Fowles layup with 2:30 left pulled the Lynx within four at 55-51. Bentley gave her club some breathing room just over a minute later with a 3-pointer. A pair of Billings free throws sealed the Dream win.
