Brunson TKOs Shahbazyan at UFC Fight Night

Derek Brunson battered Edmen Shahbazyan at the end of Round 2 and finished the job early in Round 3, winning via TKO in the main event of UFC Fight Night on Saturday night at UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Brunson ended the middleweight bout just 26 seconds into Round 3, as the previously undefeated Shahbazyan did little to protect himself after the bell rung. Brunson quickly landed a few punches, took Shahbazyan's back, torqued him to the mat and landed more blows to force referee Herb Dean to step in.

Shahbazyan appeared to still be shaken from the end of Round 2. In the final six seconds of that frame, Brunson rained elbows and punches from a half-mount position, cutting Shahbazyan's eye and landing several heavy blows before the horn temporarily prevented the bout from ending.

Brunson, 36, improved to 21-7 with his third straight win. Shahbazyan dropped to 11-1 in his fourth career UFC fight.

Earlier Saturday, Brazil's Jennifer Maia (18-6-1) defeated Scotland's Joanne Calderwood (14-5) via armbar at 4:29 of the first round of their flyweight bout.

In other main-card fights, Brazil's Vicente Luque (19-7-1) TKO'd Jamaica's Randy Brown (12-4) with a vicious knee to the head at 4:56 of the second round in a welterweight duel; and Bobby Green (26-10-1) won via unanimous decision in a lightweight battle with Lando Vannata (11-5-2).

The event was the first back in the U.S. after the UFC spent the last month holding four events on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.
